Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles would not rule out the possibility of the team trading Justin Fields and picking a quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft.
The Bears have the first pick of the 2023 draft, having beaten the Houston Texans to the top spot after the latter rallied to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 32-31 on Sunday.
Asked whether he would consider using the pick on QB during a press conference on Tuesday, Poles said he would have to really be impressed to think of making such a decision.
“We’re going to do the same as we’ve always done,” he remarked. “We’re going to evaluate the draft class, and I would say this: I’d have to be absolutely blown away to make that type of decision.”
You’d think he’d have flat-out said “no” given how much Fields has improved and how well he played this season, but it appears Poles is leaving the door open.
Fields moved leaps and bounds, both as a passer and runner, in 2022/23. He threw for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, with a passer rating of 85.2. He also rushed for 1,143 yards, the second-most for an NFL QB, only behind Lamar Jackson’s 1,206 from 2019.

“I thought Justin did a good job,” Poles noted. “I thought we changed a lot, we adapted, we tried to put him in a position to be successful. He showed the ability to be a playmaker, be impactful. He can change games quickly. Does he have room to grow? He does. He has to get better as a passer, and I’m excited to see him take those steps as we move forward.”
