This is not the way that Chase Young wanted to star what many are considering to be a make-or-break season for the former second-overall pick.
Just one day before the Washington Commanders kick off their 2023 season at home against the Arizona Cardinals, they have ruled out their star defensive end with a stinger.
The good news is Young was cleared for contact in practice this week, so he should be able to return to the Commanders lineup soon.
It’s very possible that Young could have played this week, but Washington is instead deciding to give him the extra week off with a weak Cardinals team on tap for week 1.
Through his first three seasons, Young has played in just 27 games, recording nine sacks, six forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. The last two seasons have been especially ugly for former Ohio State star, as he’s suited up for just 13 games and put up a measly 1.5 sacks.
The Commanders chose not to pick up his fifth-year contract, meaning the 24-year-old will be playing out the final year of his rookie contract in 2023.
