Washington Commanders’ star defensive end Chase Young may be out for Week 1 as he continues to deal with a stinger that he suffered in preseason.
According to Ben Standig of The Athletic, the 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year still hasn’t received clearance for contact. Young remains uncertain for the team’s Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals, Standig added.
Young suffered a torn ACL in the midst of the 2021 season and has thus been limited to 12 total games over the last two years. In three games last season, the ex-Ohio State star had zero sacks, five combined tackles and one pass defensed.
In a surprise move, the Commanders decided to decline the fifth-year option on Young’s rookie deal. So now the NFC East club risks losing Young for nothing in free agency next year, though the franchise tag remains an option if they end up wanting to keep him long-term.
The Commanders finished 8-8-1 last season despite having Young for only three games. They narrowly missed out on the NFC’s final card spot to the Seattle Seahawks, who claimed it with a 9-8 record.
