The Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly in the hunt for an additional receiver following Mike Williams’ season-ending injury.
Williams suffered a torn ACL during the win over the Minnesota Vikings late last month and will miss the remainder of the 2023 campaign.
According to X account MLFootball, sources have claimed that the team reached out to the Chicago Bears to make an inquiry into possibly trading for Chase Claypool, though talks did not get very far. They’re reportedly leaving the door open as they remain keen on adding another pass catcher in order to mitigate Williams’ absence.
Claypool’s career hasn’t quite gone according to plan. Even so, a trade could alter fortunes both for him and whichever team ends up making the acquisition. While the former Notre Dame star is not a receiver cut from the same cloth as Williams, he could still come in as a great replacement.
At 25, there’s still plenty of time for Claypool to turn his career around and it’s worth noting that he recorded over 800 yards in his first two years in the pros. Since then, he’s had to endure situations with average quarterbacks, both with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Bears.
A move for Claypool would be a risky one for the Chargers. But, given the circumstances, it appears to be one they can certainly afford to take.
