As for his career, the 49ers restructured the contract of cornerback Charvarius Ward last month. His original deal signed last offseason was a three-year contract worth $40.5 million. With the restructure, the 49ers converted nearly $12.5 million of his base salary into a signing bonus, which lowers his cap hit in 2023 and spreads it out over the remainder of the deal.
Since Ward’s deal only ran through the 2024 season, the 49ers tacked on three ‘void’ years.
The 49ers were over the 2023 salary cap prior to restructuring Ward. Redoing his deal will cost them some money down the road, but it got them back under the cap by clearing about $10 million.
The 26-year-old’s inaugural campaign with San Francisco last season was successful, as he recorded a career-high 87 tackles.
Hopefully, Ward’s daughter has successful surgery and gets on the long road to recovery so she can live a normal life. Many prayers will be sent to him and his family during this scary moment in their lives.
