The salary cap in the NFL makes all teams have to make some tough decisions every offseason, and that includes with star players on the squad.
The Los Angeles Chargers are no exception. The team is going to need to restructure some contracts and also cut some players to become cap compliant. One of those players that could find themselves on the outside looking in star wide receiver, Keenan Allen.
Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports thatthe team could get almost $15 million in savings if he was cut before Jun. 1 and $17.5 million in savings if he was cut after Jun. 1.
It should be noted that even if he is cut, he could simply be re-signed by the Chargers at a different salary rate.
Allen, who’s set to be 31 next season, finished this season with 66 receptions for 752 yards and four touchdowns. Allen played in just ten games last season as he battled a hamstring strain.
Should Allen find himself on the open market this offseason, he’s sure to have plenty of suitors. If he is cut and not brought back, this would be a major blow to Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense.
