CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie poured cold water over speculation that retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady was interested in purchasing one of the clubs.
Earlier this week, Saskatchewan-based sports personality Rod Pedersen reported that Brady was part of a group looking at buying the Montreal Alouettes. But during an interview on “The SportsCage Podcast” (h/t 3 Down Nation), the CFL commissioner suggested that this was never the case:
“All I can say is I don’t remember talking to Tom at any point during the process, so I don’t know where that rumor came from. Look, he’s obviously an iconic figure in the game of football and had Tom indicated some interest, we would have loved to have talked to him. But I can honestly say this, there’s no way you could make me more thrilled than I am to welcome Pierre Karl Péladeau into the league.”
Last month, Canadian billionaire and Quebecor Inc. CEO Pierre Karl Péladeau purchased the Alouettes.
Brady announced his retirement for a second time back on Feb. 1. There was speculation that the seven-time Super Bowl champion would join the Las Vegas Raiders or his childhood team in the San Francisco 49ers, but that obviously never transpired.
Brady announced on Mar. 23 that he had become a minority owner of the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, who are owned by Las Vegas Raiders’ owner Mark Davis. Brady will also eventually join FOX Sports as an NFL analyst (likely in 2024), having signed a 10-year contract worth $375 million.
The three-time league MVP announced his retirement in February 2022, only to announce 40 days later that he was coming back for a 23rd season. Though the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played well below expectations, Brady had a fine statistical year in which he completed 66.8 percent of his pass attempts for 4,694 yards and 25 touchdowns against only nine interceptions.
