It’s been more than two months since the Washington Commanders released quarterback Carson Wentz, who remains a free agent as OTA Offseason Workouts draw closer.
Wentz was limited to eight games in Washington last season, having missed several weeks after suffering a fractured finger. He was largely outplayed by second-stringer Taylor Heinicke, who nearly guided the Commanders to a surprise playoff berth.
While speaking on SportsCenter (h/t Adam Wells of Bleacher Report), Jeremy Fowler reported that Wentz is open to being a backup signal-caller for the 2023 season:
“I was told he’s been working out in L.A., plans to play this year. He’s had interest from some teams. He’s open to various roles; could be as a starter, could be as a backup, but he just wants to play this coming year.”
Looking around the league, it’s hard to find many teams that could offer Wentz the opportunity to compete for a starting QB position. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have the inconsistent Baker Mayfield and 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask atop their depth chart, so adding a more experienced QB like Wentz wouldn’t be the worst idea.
The Arizona Cardinals won’t have Kyler Murray to start the season as he continues to recover from an ACL tear he suffered in December. Perhaps Arizona will have some interest in adding Wentz as insurance until Murray returns?

In eight games last season, Wentz completed 62.3 percent of his pass attempts for 1,755 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Wentz, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear late in the 2017 season, won a Super Bowl ring with the Philadelphia Eagles that same year. Backup Nick Foles took over the offense for Wentz and led Philly to the franchise’s first Lombardi Trophy.
