It’s been five months now since the Washington Commanders released quarterback Carson Wentz, and he remains a free agent with preseason play just around the corner.
But with Cincinnati Bengals’ quarterback Joe Burrow sidelined indefinitely with a calf strain, could the reigning AFC North champions turn to the No. 2 selection of the 2016 draft for insuance?
Jarrett Bailey of Touchdown Wire looked at three quarterbacks that the Bengals should look at as “short-term” insurance for Burrow. One of those quarterbacks was Wentz, who would be on his fourth team in as many years if he joined Cincy:
“Unless the Bengals intend on taking Matt Ryan away from CBS to play for a month, or want to kick the tires on whatever is left of Joe Flacco, Wentz makes the most sense.
And yes, I’m aware “Wentz makes sense” sounds like a campaign slogan that Wentz would use to run for Senate in his quest to make coal prevalent, once again.
With Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd as his receiver corps, it would be hard for the former No. 2 overall pick to completely implode, though we’ve certainly seen him do it before.”
On Saturday, the Bengals added extra quarterback depth by picking up Reid Sinnett, who spent the 2023 season with the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas. But with no NFL snaps under Sinnett’s belt, the Bengals certainly should be open to adding a veteran NFL signal-caller.
Wentz is coming off a frustrating lone season in Washington in which he lost five of seven starts. He completed 62.5 percent of his pass attempts for 1,755 yards and 11 touchdowns against nine interceptions.

The Commanders acquired Wentz is an offseason trade with the Indianapolis Colts, who gave up on the veteran QB after one season. Wentz had lost his starting job to then-rookie Jalen Hurts with the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2020 season.
For his career, Wentz has 22,129 passing yards and 151 touchdowns.
