Well, you don’t hear stories like this every day.
Per Joe Person of The Athletic, the Carolina Panthers claimed cornerback Justin Layne off waivers from the Chicago Bears. The only problem? Layne never actually joined them.
As of this writing, no reason for Layne’s failure to report to the Panthers has been shared.
The Michigan State product was taken by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round, 83rd overall, in the 2019 NFL Draft. He stayed with the organization for three seasons before the Steelers released Layne in August.
Layne played seven games for the New York Giants earlier this season before joining the Bears. With the Giants, Layne recorded four combined tackles and one pass defense. He was later waived and joined the Bears, playing two games there before getting waived again.
At 5-9, the Panthers are just one game out of the NFC South division race. Steve Wilks and company will welcome the red-hot Detroit Lions on Saturday afternoon.
