The Carolina Panthers are reportedly making four notable starters available via trade as the Oct. 31 deadline nears closer.
According to a report from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, Carolina is a club “to watch” ahead of the trade deadline. Superstar pass-rusher Brian Burns is obviously the top trade chip, but Breer added that safety Jeremy Chinn, wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. and cornerback Donte Jackson are also “available” in trade discussions:
Conversation there starts with Brian Burns. He’s up after this year and owed more than eight figures for the remainder of the season (prorated portion of his $16.01 million). But he’s also just 25 and plays a premium position…A team trading for him could, of course, do a new deal with him, or franchise him in 2024.
After that, there are three guys I’ve heard are available—safety Jeremy Chinn, receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. and corner Donte Jackson. Chinn is an interesting hybrid linebacker who’d fit some teams better than others, has lost playing time in the switch to Ejiro Evero’s scheme and is in a contract year. Marshall’s a second-rounder who has talent but has yet to really find his footing as a pro. And Jackson’s a really good corner who’s signed through 2024 at a reasonable price (about $4.2 million for the rest of this year and $10.6 million next year).”
The Panthers sacrificed significant draft capital to the Chicago Bears this past offseason so they could move up and take Alabama quarterback Bryce Young with the first overall pick. The Panthers are football’s lone remaining winless team at 0-5, and there’s a real probability that they’ll end up surrendering the No. 1 pick of 2024 to Chicago.
Carolina obviously has plenty of roster holes to fill, and they have extremely limited draft capital over the next two years to address them. So it only makes sense to be a hard seller at this year’s trade deadline, where GM Scott Fitterer can recoup some of those draft picks.
The 25-year-old Burns has been Carolina’s best player in the young 2023 season, recording four sacks and one forced fumble. Chinn, a versatile safety, has one sack, one pass defense and 23 combined tackles.
