On Friday, social media users noticed that the team’s current quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater, suddenly unfollowed the Carolina Panthers and locked his account amid so many reports about the team being linked to Deshaun Watson.
It appears there was a reason why he was doing that.
David Newton of ESPN reports that the Panthers are clearing cap space and plan to make a “strong run” at trading for Texans QB Deshaun Watson if the Texans change their stance and make him available.
Just this week alone, the team announced they were releasing defensive end Stephen Weatherly and punter Michael Palardy. Combined with this week’s release of veteran defensive tackle Kawann Short, the Panthers have carved around $16.4 million worth of space off the cap.
On Saturday, Field Yates of ESPN added that the team converted $7.04 million of C Matt Paradis‘ $8.03 million base salary in 2021 into a signing bonus. This move created $4,693,334 in cap space for Carolina.
