After the Chiefs’ 38-35 victory in Super Bowl 57, there was no doubt that the number one talking point would be the controversial defensive holding penalty on Eagles cornerback James Bradberry that essentially iced the game for the Chiefs.
Head referee Carl Cheffers had to expect he would be confronted with questions about the call, and he was prepared to answer them following the big game.
When asked about the holding call on Bradberry, Cheffers described it as “a clear case of a jersey grab that caused restriction.”
“[Juju Smith-Schuster] went to the inside and he was attempting to release to the outside,” Cheffers began explaining to reporters.”The defender grabbed the jersey with his right hand and restricted him from releasing to the outside. So, therefore, we called defensive holding.”
The reporter asking the questions didn’t seem convinced by Cheffers’ explanation, and he’s probably not the only one.
In a game that was shaping up to be one of the all-time great Super Bowls, the last thing anyone wanted to see was a ticky-tacky penalty call to decide the outcome — especially after there had been so few penalties called throughout the other 58 minutes of the contest.
