Cam Newton is the reason he is out of a job this week.
The New England Patriots shockingly released quarterback Cam Newton on Tuesday, and are set to make rookie Mac Jones the starter. Newton had started throughout the preseason and was expected to be named the starter ahead of Tuesday’s roster cut deadline.
Something behind the scenes must’ve happened, to which some NFL insiders dove into the many reasons of why he is not on the team. One of them is his unwillingness to get vaccinated.
“A couple of factors in play with releasing Cam Newton rather than keeping him on as the Patriots’ backup: His command of the locker room, and his vaccination status. Neither make him an ideal choice as a backup behind a rookie QB.”
“There wasn’t just one reason that Cam Newton is gone. It was a combination of at least three, I’m told: Mac Jones’ emergence, Newton’s vaccination stance (which caused a bit of a stir behind the scenes) and Cam’s uninspiring performance this summer.”

Newton was forced to miss practice time because of COVID protocols.
“On Saturday, Cam Newton traveled to a Club-approved medical appointment that required him to leave the New England area. He received daily Covid tests, which were all negative. Due to a misunderstanding about tests conducted away from NFL facilities, and as required by the NFL-NFLPA protocols, Cam will be subject to the five-day entry cadence process before returning to the facility. Cam will continue participating virtually in team activities and return to the club facility on Thursday, August 26.”
Newton will now hit free agency, and he’ll likely have offers from other teams looking for a veteran quarterback, but will have limited time to learn a new playbook.
