Ryan Tannehill did not make any friends with his comments earlier this week.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill was trending on social media shortly after he was asked about mentoring third-round pick Malik Willis.
“I don’t think it’s my job to mentor him. If he learns from me along the way, that’s a great thing,” Tannehill told the Nashville media.
Tannehill, who led the Titans to back-to-back AFC South titles last season before losing to the Cincinnati Bengals in the Divisional Round, drew criticism from many around the league Tuesday after Tennessee drafted the Liberty quarterback with the 86th overall pick Friday.
On Wednesday, a video of Cam Newton resurfaced from 2019 commenting on then-rookie quarterback Will Grier. In the clip, Newton said that it’s his responsibility to mentor Grier for the sake of the organization.
“It’s my job to put myself and this team in the best situation and to get everybody ready,” Newton said in 2019.

Willis was considered to be a first-round prospect for much of the lead-up to the draft but slipped to the third round. The Titans pounced when he fell to them. Tannehill is clearly taking issue with the team not informing him beforehand.
Tannehill will be 34 before the 2022 season is done, and the Titans don’t want to get caught without a replacement option when it’s time to move on from him.
This is the way of the NFL world. Veteran QB gets old and starts to regress and the team goes out and finds a young replacement to takeover within a few years or so.
