When Richard Sherman called Cam Newton’s contract with the New England Patriots “ridiculous,” a lot of people thought he was just simply talking.
Now we have all of the details and Sherman was right.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Newton — the 2015 NFL MVP — is guaranteed less than a million bucks this coming season.

Beyond that, retaining the option to franchise tag Newton in 2021 is another huge advantage for the team.
This was a steal for the Patriots, especially considering they are up against the salary cap. On top of that, the team can part ways with him prior to the start of the season and really not lose much.
Newton will compete with second-year player Jarrett Stidham for the starting job.
