Cam Newton has recalled a dinner in which he felt like he “got away with murder” based on relative costs.
The former NFL quarterback was the No. 1 overall pick in 2011 after winning the Heisman Trophy at Auburn. He was handed a four-year deal worth $22 million by the Carolina Panthers, which proved to be well deserved as he was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year and the Offensive Player of the Year four seasons later, as well as MVP.
Speaking on his “Funky Friday Clips” podcast this week, Cam told viewers a story involving some costly steaks, wines, and champagnes. The three-time Pro Bowler revealed he ran up a bill of $17K that was eye-popping at the time.
“At the end of the year we had a rookie dinner, and I remember that because like damn they closed the restaurant,” he said with a long whistle. “They got some big a** steaks. I don’t even drink but that’s a big a** wine bottle and champagne. We sorry as hell, why the hell they getting all this stuff. And then they sent me that bill? Oh my goodness…
“Like as a rookie, when you getting that type of money, you still are mentally broke. … The tab, I think it was upwards of $17,000. I ain’t never spent that type of money in my life. … But then I started hearing other stories like $50,000, $60,000 and this that and third, oh shoot I got away with murder.”
Newton just recently addressed speculation on whether he’s being blackballed by the NFL because of his hair and fashion sense. The 33-year-old has a very loud sense of style and wears his hair in dreadlocks. Hardly seems a reason a team wouldn’t want him.
