Cam Newton is back in Carolina, but he could’ve been on another squad much earlier in the season.
According to Panthers insider Sheena Quick, Newton turned down a pair of contracts from the Seattle Seahawks and Houston Texans.
Both the Texans and Seahawks have dealt with QB injuries in 2021. Playing with the Seahawks would’ve put him on a contender, but with the return of Russell Wilson, he likely would’ve rode the bench for much of the year.
Tyrod Taylor just returned for Houston, but played badly. He likely could’ve won the starting job, but the Texans are a train wreck.
The former MVP agreed to a contract with the Panthers on Thursday, the team announced. The one-year deal is worth up to $10 million with $4.5 million guaranteed and a $1.5 million roster bonus, according to multiple reports.
Through nine games, the Panthers sit at 4-5 and it seems that Sam Darnold isn’t the answer at quarterback. PJ Walker was in line to be Carolina’s starter before the Newton reunion.
