Cam Newton has made a surprising statement following his involvement in a physical altercation that took place during his 7-on-7 tournament in Atlanta on Sunday.
The quarterback is reported to have gotten “jumped” while trying to stop a fight and was seen fending off multiple attackers before security intervened.
While he did not appear to be in the wrong, Newton has apologized for his part in the brawl.
“To every single high school player, to every single person I’ve influenced, to every single athlete—use my situation as a way to understand, that in one moment and one decision, your life can change. Just like that,” he said in a YouTube video which has since been removed. “And I let my emotions get the best of me, and it should not have been called for. Simple.
“And with that, I apologize to anybody affected—that’s Steph, that’s TJ, that’s their organization, that’s C1N, my organization, that’s my players, my parents, my staff members.
“I can’t sit up there and say, ‘hey, bro, you gotta be bigger than that’ and then all of a sudden I do that — and that just goes to show you you’ve got to always stay in control of your emotions.”
Newton has had the backing of just about everyone in the media, though he has also gotten criticized for his part in the fight. But it appears it’s all water under the bridge now.
