Cam Newton would love to return to the NFL, but he’s not going to sell himself short in order to do so.
The former Carolina Panthers star recently spoke to Robert Griffin III on the ‘RG3 and The Ones’ podcast and discussed the possibility of signing with the New York Jets on the back of Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury.
Rodgers’ early-season misfortune left a vacancy in NY, with several free-agent QBs perking up at the prospect of joining the Gang Green. The team has since signed Trevor Siemian to their practice squad, but there could be an opportunity for another signal-caller in the not-too-distant future.
Newton is one of the QBs often attached to such potentialities, at least in the media. And he’s let the Jets know they’d have to make him a tempting offer if they want him.
“Going back to control? You not about to sit up there and penny pinch me, bro.” He declared “I’m not about to sit up here and sign no $5.5 million deal bro, those days are over. I’d be wasting my time.”
The former MVP insisted he’s in shape and is ready to play should an opportunity surface, however, he isn’t willing to suit up for just any team and would have to consider all of the factors involved.

“Because I will tell you, if you don’t think that I could be on a roster right now, I could but it’s bigger than that to me,” he added “Am I in shape right now? Hell yeah. In any situation, I’m gonna sit up there and Imma analyze it as much as possible.
“I don’t want to walk into a dysfunctional situation. Have you guys made Zach Wilson aware? also Aaron Rodgers is trying to come back this year, let’s also talk about that… so when he comes back is it just going to be something that you’ll say: ‘Watch out’? So it’s a lot of things, that I don’t just make impulse decisions.”
Newton, the first overall pick in 2011, hasn’t played in the NFL since his second spell with the Panthers in 2021. Whether he returns to the league at some point is anyone’s guess.
