In the days after Cam Newton was released by the Patriots, Rob Ninkovich dropped a shocking bombshell that rookie Mac Jones was essentially teaching the playbook to Newton.
On Friday, Newton released a video in which he opened up on a number of topics surrounding his departure from the Patriots. He hit back at the notion that the rookie was teaching him anything this summer. He said that all of the quarterbacks worked together to help better understand certain situations.
“No,” Newton said with a laugh when asked about it on his video.
“What can Mac teach me?” he asked.
Newton added he had just never been in a system where he had to know where the mike linebacker was and had to identify certain defensive fronts. He further explained that about 30 teams don’t run the philosophy the Patriots run.
The Patriots signed Newton in the middle of the 2020 offseason after nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers. It was a no-win situation as he tried to fill the shoes of Tom Brady who departed from the franchise earlier that offseason.
