The relationship between Calvin Johnson and the Detroit Lions is on the mend after a financial dispute that led to a total breakdown after he retired in 2016.
A former star wide receiver in the NFL, Johnson was made to return $1.6 million from his signing bonus when he decided to hang it up and, of course, that did not go down well with the player.
It appears there’s now a way back as far as the relationship is concerned, with Johnson having revealed that things were “trending up” in that regard earlier this month. CBS Sports’ Jim Rome pressed on the matter this week, seeking clarification, and the former Pro Bowler was very forthcoming.
The 37-year-old revealed he’s been having “some good conversations” with the team, also crediting chief operating officer Mike Disner for his efforts to “get us back on the same page.”
Johnson is keen on spending time with the Lions and helping their players. He reckons he would still be a credit to the franchise.
“I’m excited about him actually reaching out and putting the effort forward to try and make that happen,” he said. “That’s the difference that I have not seen in the past that’s happening now.

“I want to be back around football and help out the team. Not that they need my help, but I have a lot of experience to share with those guys, whether it’s football or off the field. I definitely could be of value to the organization.”
Johnson only played for nine seasons but remains the Lions’ record holder in receiving yards and touchdowns with 11,619 and 83 respectively. A reunion with the team would be great for both parties.
