The Buffalo Bills are adding another veteran offensive running back to their roster after losing Nyheim Hines to injury.
Per a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Ty Johnson is planning to sign with the Buffalo Bills. Earlier this offseason, the Bills lost Hines for the 2023 season after he suffered a torn ACL in a jet skiing accident.
Johnson spent his rookie 2019 season with the Detroit Lions and split the 2020 campaign with the NFC North club and the New York Jets, who claimed him off of waivers. Johnson had his best season in 2021, recording 610 total yards of offense (238 rushing, 372 receiving) and four total touchdowns.
Johnson’s role with the Jets decreased considerably last season. Despite appearing in all 17 games, he finished with just 248 yards of offense and one touchdown.
But Johnson is in good position to succeed on a high-powered Buffalo offense led by dual-threat quarterback Josh Allen and superstar wideout Stefon Diggs. The Bills’ don’t have a clear-cut RB1 on their roster, so the opportunity is there for Johnson to move his way up the depth chart.
Buffalo’s 2022 leading rusher, Devin Singletary, signed with the Houston Texans in free agency. The rest of the Bills’ running back depth chart consists of sophomore James Cook and veterans Damien Harris and Latavius Murray.
