With Tom Brady announcing his retirement, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers need a new starting quarterback for 2023.
The Buccaneers could go with 2021 first-round pick Kyle Trask, though he hasn’t seen any meaningful NFL action yet. The more realistic option is to find a veteran signal-caller via trade or free agency, as Tampa is out of reach for one of the top 2023 NFL Draft QB prospects in Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Will Levis.
Over at FanSided’s NFL Spin Zone site, Sayre Bedinger proposed the idea of the Buccaneers going for Washington Commanders starting quarterback Carson Wentz, a likely roster cut:
“The Washington Commanders appear poised to clean house at the QB position once again. Keep an eye out for Carson Wentz’s release. If/when that happens, he jumps into the top 10 of these rankings and I would say he’d be a candidate for a team like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.”
If he’s officially released by the Commanders, Wentz will soon find himself on his fourth team in as many years. The Philadelphia Eagles traded him to the Indianapolis Colts in the 2021 offseason, receiving a first-round pick as part of the return.
Wentz had a decent statistical season in Indianapolis, but an ugly Week 18 home loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars that ended the team’s playoff hopes prompted the Colts to give up on Wentz after just one year.
Wentz was limited to eight games last season because of a broken finger. Cutting him would save Washington just over $26 million against the cap.
