The Denver Broncos and Russell Wilson could soon part ways. At least that’s how former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh figures it.
Wilson found himself on the end of a public dressing down from head coach Sean Payton during the Broncos’ blowout loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 15, and it’s led the erstwhile wideout to believe that the coach could be done with the quarterback at the end of the season.
“I’ve just never seen a head coach attack a quarterback like that. Never in practice, let alone in a game for everybody to see,” Houshmandzadeh told Collin Cowherd on ‘The Herd’ this week. “To me, that shows me Sean Payton is fed up. I can’t see Russell Wilson lasting much longer in Denver.”
Payton lost his patience after watching his team fail to grab a touchdown from a goal-line situation, with an offside penalty moving them back to a fourth down at the one-yard line.
Wilson did not fire back at Payton and, speaking to reporters on Monday, insisted that he wants to see that kind of passion from his coach.
“You want a coach that’s passionate,” he said. “We want players that are, too, and everything else. And so, we wanted to score a touchdown. I think my biggest thing is always trying to focus on the next play and unfortunately, those few plays, we didn’t get the touchdowns.”

Wilson and the Broncos have improved from last season. He’s thrown for 2,832 yards for 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while his quarterback rating stands at 97.5. However, he’s averaging 6.9 yards per pass attempt, a career low.
Denver remains within a shot of still making it to the playoffs, but they’d likely have to finish the regular season with a perfect 3-0 run to give themselves a proper chance.
