The Denver Broncos had a terrible offense last season and ranked 32 among NFL teams; it’s why they’ve given up so much in exchange for Sean Payton.
The team has made some good moves to improve its offense this offseason and a former league general manager has advised a move for Austin Ekeler now that he’s available.
The Los Angeles Chargers running back has led the league in rushing yards over the past two seasons but it’s unlikely he stays put ahead of the upcoming one as he has requested a trade and has since been granted permission.
Randy Mueller, formerly the GM of the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins, has suggested that the Broncos could present Ekeler with the perfect situation.
“I think someplace like Denver where Sean Payton is going to put in and look for an Alvin Kamara, a guy like that to play on third-downs, to do some things in the passing game,” Mueller told Heavy.com.
“If he gets in the right scheme and the right situation, I could see him not only getting a new contract, but continuing to lead the league in touchdowns every year.”

Should Ekeler end up in Denver, he would be reunited with offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. The latter has joined Payton’s staff after two seasons with the Chargers.
Ekeler showed remarkable improvement during those two seasons, but Lombardi was fired after the team exited the playoffs by blowing a 27-point lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars this year and is now back working with Payton.
