Brock Purdy turned to his faith at halftime to help rally the San Francisco 49ers past the Detroit Lions in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.
Purdy and the 49ers found themselves trailing 24-7 at halftime to the underdog Lions, and Kyle Shanahan’s group looked poised to suffer a third straight defeat in the conference title game. But the 49ers came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, outscoring Detroit 27-7 over the final 30 minutes to punch a ticket to Super Bowl 58.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Purdy said that he told God, “Win or lose, I’m gonna glorify you.” That brought “peace” for the second-year quarterback, who then willed his team to an improbable comeback victory:
The 49ers scored 27 consecutive points that the Lions didn’t answer until the final minute of the game. A late touchdown cut the 49ers’ lead to three points, but they recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock to secure the victory.
San Francisco will meet Patrick Mahomes and the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 58, a rematch of the big game featuring these two franchises four years ago.
