Britt Reid pleaded not guilty to a driving while intoxicated charge Monday, months after he was involved in a crash that left a 5-year-old girl with a critical brain injury.
Ariel Young suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, a parietal fracture, brain contusions, and subdural hematomas in the crash.
The former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach had been under a driving ban prior to the hearing as part of his bond conditions, which Jackson County Judge Jessica Agnelly changed and allowed him back on the road, provided a device is installed that will measure his blood alcohol content.
The judge ordered Reid’s vehicle be outfitted with an ignition interlock device, a “breathalyzer for car ignitions that’s installed to prevent users from being able to start their vehicle after drinking alcohol.” Reid’s attorney, J.R. Hobbs, did not object to the installation of the ignition interlock device.
Police say Reid was drunk when he left the Chiefs’ practice facility three days before the team was set to play in Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Bucs. He was driving a white Dodge Ram Laramie and crashed into the back of a Chevrolet Traverse that had Young and a 4-year-old inside. The driver of the Traverse was assisting a family member who ran out of gas in a Chevrolet Impala and was stalled on the side of the road.
Court documents say Reid was at work on that night and his blood alcohol content was measured at .113. He was also driving 82 mph in a 65 mph zone.
