A certain quarterback signing has already been ruled out for the New England Patriots after the team surprisingly cut both of their backups this week.
Mac Jones remains the only QB on the roster following Tuesday’s cut deadline, with the Pats waiving both Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham, having previously released Trace McSorley.
Zappe helped the team win two regular-season games in 2022 while Jones was out with an injury but had a difficult training camp and preseason. Still, his release came as a shock, even to people within the Patriots organization.
Cunningham was already becoming a fan favorite on the back of an impressive preseason debut against the Houston Texans. While he trained as a QB, as well as a wide receiver, during camp, his versatility and athleticism weren’t enough to convince the team to keep him.
The team is now in need of another signal caller.
Brian Hoyer, a QB who spent eight seasons in three different stints with New England, was tipped for yet another return. Hoyer has played both starter and backup for the team, so his name naturally came up after they cut their backups.

However, he has already been ruled out as a signing as Bostonsportsjournal.com’s Greg A. Bedard reports he is not an option.
Hoyer also had spells with the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Texans, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Indianapolis Colts.
He’s been good for 10,668 yards and 53 touchdowns in his career.
