New York Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll used the ultimate death stare to express his unhappiness with the club’s special teams department on Friday.
In the third quarter of Friday’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions, the Giants allowed a massive 95-yard punt return touchdown to Maurice Alexander. It proved to be one of the game’s decisive plays, as Detroit won 21-16.
After allowing the touchdown, Daboll displayed a not-so-pleased stare towards Giants’ special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey.
Daboll comes from the Bill Belichick coaching tree, and the latter is known for stressing the importance of special teams. And for good reason. That’s how he’s produced six Super Bowl championship seasons in New England.
The one positive for Daboll and company is that this was only a preseason game. The Giants may as well get sloppy plays like this out of the way now before the meaningful games begin.

The 50-year-old McGaughey has been the Giants’ special teams coordinator since 2018. He won a Super Bowl 42 ring with the club on Tom Coughlin’s staff in the 2007 season as an assistant special teams coordinator.
McGaughey also previously served as the special teams coordinator for the New York Jets (2014), San Francisco 49ers (2015) and Carolina Panthers (2016-2017).
Daboll and the Giants will open their 2023 season with a home game against the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 10.
