If the San Francisco 49ers make it back to the Super Bowl again, they want to make damn sure they have the necessary pieces to stop the opposing quarterback that might end up being Patrick Mahomes once again.
On Wednesday morning, the team wasted no time as they announced the signing of veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks who was a team captain last year with the Los Angeles Chargers.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the San Francisco 49ers are signing Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Eric Kendricks to a one-year deal.
The Chargers released him earlier this month.

It’s a small move for a team that entered the offseason without a lot of financial room to do much of anything. The team is currently $6.4 million under the $255.4 million cap, which hasn’t taken account of Kendricks’ salary as of yet.

Kendricks will provide depth with Dre Greenlaw recovering from a torn Achilles suffered in the Super Bowl. The injury changed everything for the team as it happened when Greenlaw was jogging onto the field for a defensive series in the second quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Greenlaw had successful surgery on Feb. 15 and he’s expected to make a full recovery.
Kendricks, a second-round pick, registered 117 tackles, including seven tackles for a loss, seven quarterback hits, 3.5 sacks, six passes defensed, and a forced fumble in 15 game appearances last year.
