The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly looking to bolster their defenses ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline.
According to a report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic, San Francisco is making calls around the league as they’re “looking to add a few pieces like edge rusher and cornerback.”
Ahead of last year’s deadline, the 49ers acquired All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers. The 49ers paid a hefty price for his services, but they’ve since gone 15-3 in the regular season since the trade.
Though San Fran enters Sunday with the third-best scoring defense in the league, their stunning Week 7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings emphasized the club’s need to add more cornerback depth. Top corner Charvarius Ward had a tough outing against Minny’s offense, and none of the 49ers’ defensive backs stepped up to help him.
Javon Hargrave and Drake Jackson share the team lead in sacks with three apiece. Superstar Nick Bosa has just 2.5, a far cry from the league-leading 18.5 he posted a year ago en route to Defensive Player of the Year honors.
The 49ers are still sitting comfortably with a 5-2 record, and they’re in the running with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions for the conference’s top seed.

Philly’s acquisition of All-Pro safety Kevin Byard earlier this week in a trade with the Tennessee Titans should only motivate 49ers GM John Lynch to make a blockbuster move or two ahead of the deadline. Stay tuned.
