One of the most improbable heroes in Super Bowl history has officially decided to call it quits.
Speaking to Aaron Wilson of KP RC2 in Houston, former New England Patriots Pro Bowl cornerback and two-time Super Bowl champion Malcolm Butler revealed that he is retiring from football.
“I am retired,” Butler told Wilson, “I did the best I can do. Walking away from the game feeling comfortable. Everybody can do more, but I’m satisfied with my career. It’s time to move on and transition.”
Though Butler was a mainstay in the Patriots’ secondary during their second dynastic run, he will always be remembered for one play: The goal line interception off of Russell Wilson in the waning seconds of Super Bowl 49.

The undrafted product out of West Alabama played for the Patriots from 2014 to 2017, winning a pair of Super Bowl rings. He spent the final three seasons of his playing career with the Tennessee Titans.
Butler briefly retired in 2022 before signing a two-year deal to return to the Patriots in the 2022 offseason. He was released before the season began and never wound up playing again.
