The Dallas Cowboys’ defense was a pleasant surprise last season, as the once-troubled group emerged as a strength for Jerry Jones’ team in 2021. Now, in an effort to maintain that strength, the Cowboys have re-signed two key contributors on their defense to significant contract extensions.
Late last night, it was first reported that Dallas had agreed to a three-year, $30-million fully guaranteed deal with defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.
And they weren’t done there. Early this morning, Dallas retained a second key piece to their defense when they handed Randy Gregory a new deal of his own that will pay him $70-million over the next five years, with $28-million of that guaranteed.
In 12 game appearances last season, Gregory had six sacks (good enough for second-most on the team), along with three forced fumbles and an interception. As for Lawrence, he only managed to play seven games, during which he posted three sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception.
The Cowboys as a whole gave up the seventh-fewest points per game in the NFL during the 2021 season, at 21.1. Their 41 total sacks ranked 13th in the league, while their 33 takeaways were good enough for second in the NFL — just one behind the top-ranked Colts.
