The San Francisco 49ers were forced to turn back to Jimmy Garoppolo after starting quarterback Trey Lance was carted off with an ankle injury in the first quarter of their Week 2 match with the Seattle Seahawks.
It appears that Jimmy G will be called upon for the remainder of the season as Lance is expected to miss the entire year.
Adam Schefter released the bad news via his Twitter account by tweeting, “49ers’ QB Trey Lance suffered a significant ankle injury today that is expected to require surgery that likely will end his season, per source.”
It’s a huge blow to the 49ers, who were banking on Lance to elevate their offense after Garoppolo led San Francisco to the NFC title game in 2021.
If there’s any consolation for the Niners, it’s the fact that they kept Garoppolo around after nearly trading him in the offseason. The team knows they can have success with him under center based on their success when he’s started over the last three years.
Not many NFL teams can feel that confident when turning to their backup quarterback — a luxury I’m sure Niners fans are glad they have right about now.
