Brandon Staley has been getting blasted since late Sunday night when he took a late timeout where it appeared that the Las Vegas Raiders were just going to concede to a tie so both teams made the playoffs and would eliminate the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After the game, the Los Angeles Chargers head coach explained that he was simply trying to get the correct personnel in the game.
“We needed to get in the right grouping,” Staley said. “We felt like they were going to run the ball, so we wanted to get our best 11 personnel run defense in, make that substitution so we could get a play where we would deepen the field goal.”
After the timeout, the Raiders gained another 10 yards before kicking the game-winning 47-yard field goal.
Staley said he does not believe the timeout made the Raiders more aggressive about playing to win.
“I don’t think it changed their mindset,” Staley said.

Very hard pill to swallow for a team that appeared on the cusp of making it to the postseason all year long. A terrible loss to the Houston Texans combined with Sunday night’s debacle proved extremely costly.
