Boomer Esiason and his colleagues on “The NFL Today” got more than they bargained for after Sunday’s AFC Championship Game in Baltimore.
CBS aired the Baltimore Ravens-Kansas City Chiefs AFC Championship Game at M&T Bank Stadium, with Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champions coming out on top by a final score of 17-10.
During Monday’s episode of his WFAN show (h/t Daniel Bates of The Spun), Esiason revealed that the CBS crew was confronted by an angry fan and conspiracy theorist at a Baltimore train station following the conference championship game.
Esiason claimed that the fan was getting so aggressive that he almost had to take matters into his own hands, before bystanders and police diffused the situation:
“The Raven fans couldn’t have been any nicer at the stadium and even in this situation, for the most part. Except for one total (expletive)…He decides that he’s gonna come over and he’s gonna talk to us about how the NFL is rigged. And hes using very colorful language. I said, ‘Listen, if he gets any closer, I may have to get up and effing smash this guy right in the face.’ And I’m pissed off now. I’m trying to watch the (NFC Championship on my iPad), this idiot is screaming about how the NFL is rigged…
It was nuts! And then another Ravens fan started yelling at this guy and then the cops came in.”
Any football fan who’s active on social media has probably noticed more and more accusations among angry fans that the NFL is “scripted” or “rigged.” It’s unfortunate that Boomer and his colleagues had to be attacked like that by one disgruntled fan after a game, but good on those nearby who helped break it up.
