Bill Belichick can only stomach mediocrity for so long and, given he doesn’t have a choice but to keep Mac Jones, the head coach is keen on adding weapons around the young quarterback.
Jakobi Meyers has left in free agency, signing for the Las Vegas Raiders. But the Pats have brought in JuJu Smith-Schuster on a three-year deal following his success with the Kansas City Chiefs and are said to be keeping an eye on Odell Beckham Jr. too.
JuJu has joined as a solid receiving option. But the Patriots will likely add more players to the position and San Francisco 49ers star Brandon Aiyuk’s name is being floated as a potential acquisition given the financial situation the Niners are faced with.
The team might not be able to extend the 25-year-old wideout as they have several players earning mega salaries on their roster and, per Alex Kay of Bleacher Report, the Pats should be able to convince San Francisco with the offer of their No. 14 pick for this year’s draft.
He writes:
“Aiyuk, a first-round pick in 2020, just had his first 1,000-yard season and notched a career-high eight touchdowns. He’s going to be due for a major extension soon, one the 49ers may not be able to offer.
“With wide receivers recently netting big value in terms of capital during draft-day deals—Marquise Brown and A.J. Brown both returned at least a first-round pick for their services last year—the Niners could pull off a similar move by sending Aiyuk to the Patriots.”

The Pats aren’t known for developing WRs and prefer them seasoned, so Aiyuk should present an enticing option. The deal would be great for both sides as Belichick would get a top wideout to add to his receiving group while the Niners would get a first-round pick for a player whom they might not be able to afford soon enough.
