The Buffalo Bills have signed an additional pass catcher to give star quarterback Josh Allen another receiving option, having signed a WR who starred in the XFL this year.
According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Bills have signed Marcell Ateman on the back of a tryout, while they’ve released Braydon Johnson.
Ateman played for the St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL this season, making 19 receptions for 259 yards. While he doesn’t have the markings of a star player, at least not right now, he could prove a solid option for a QB of Allen’s talent.
The former Oklahoma State wideout has had stints in the NFL before, having played for the Raiders, both in Oakland and Las Vegas. A seventh-round pick, the 28-year-old made 15 catches for 154 yards and one touchdown in 2018 and another five for 116 yards in 2019.
He was also part of the Arizona Cardinals training camp in 2022.
As a college player, Ateman made the All-Big 12, registering 59 receptions for 1,156 yards and eight touchdowns.

Playing with a quarterback such as Allen should benefit the WR’s career as long as he gets minutes. He could also take some pressure off Stefon Diggs, who is the Bills’ main receiving option.
