This week the sports world has held its collective breath as it awaits news on the recovery of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest and collapsed on Monday night against the Cincinnati Bengals.
After Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during Monday’s game, Coach Sean McDermott said the player’s prognosis is “very encouraging.” It got even better on Friday.
Bills head coach Sean McDermott said in a press conference Friday that he told his team he had a surprise for them, which was Hamlin welcoming everybody on a zoom call.
“He was able to gesture, moreso with his hands. But we were able to hear him say, ‘I love you, boys’ to the team and the people in the room. Remarkable progress over the last 24 hours,” McDermott said on WGR 550, via Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.
McDermott has been the head coach in Buffalo since 2017. He has helped establish the Bills as a perennial power, taking them to the playoffs in all but one year since he took over, after they were left out every year from 2000-2016. He’s helped lead the Bills to back-to-back AFC East division titles, and they’re in position to do so again in 2022.

In 2021, he coached the Bills to their first postseason victory since 1995.
The 24-year-old Hamlin was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft after his stellar career at the University of Pittsburgh. He has received an outpouring of support since his scary medical condition left him motionless on the field on Monday night.
However, great things have happened such as thousands of people from across the country have donated well over $7.8 million to his Community Toy Drive GoFundMe.
