Buffalo Bills general manager appeared to take a shot at the Cincinnati Bengals while speaking to reporters on Tuesday.
The Bills, who entered the 2022 season as Super Bowl favorites, were eliminated by the Bengals in Sunday’s Divisional Round tilt by a final score of 27-10. It marked the second straight year in which Buffalo was eliminated in the Divisional Round.
Beane acknowledged that the Bengals are in a good cap situation since superstars Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase are on rookie contracts. Soon after, Beane appeared to take a shot at the roster with the following comment, via the team’s official website:
“They right now are on the advantage of a rookie quarterback contract. And they had some lean years and without getting too much into their build, I don’t want to suck bad enough to have to get Ja’Marr Chase. I would love to have him, but you got to go through some lean years to do that. They were able to get Burrow at one, and I don’t remember where Chase was drafted, but it was pretty high.”
The Bengals drafted Burrow first overall in 2020, and it proved to be one of the first two franchise-changing selections. Then a year later, they selected Burrow’s former LSU teammate in Chase with the No. 5 pick.
Fast forward less than two years later, and the Bengals are now playing for the AFC Championship for the second year in a row. Not bad considering that this team didn’t win a single playoff game from 1991 to 2020.
