Just seconds after Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field from cardiac arrest on Monday, medical personnel swarmed onto the field in an immediate response that has been widely credited for the player’s steps toward recovery.
From Monday to Friday has been quite the rollercoaster ride as Hamlin is awake, breathing on his own, and even speaking with his teammates.
On his personal Instagram account, Hamlin has even taken the time to repost well wishes from people. The first one he shared was a story from teammate Stefon Diggs. It shows the star wide receiver standing in front of a logo for Hamlin’s “Chasing M’s Foundation.”
“My big slime!” Hamlin wrote.
On Monday night in Cincinnati, everything stopped after Hamlin collapsed to the ground and CPR had to be administered to get him breathing again. Hamlin was transported to the hospital, where he was sedated. On Thursday, his doctors announced Hamlin had started to awaken. Though he remains critically ill, his medical team said the player is showing signs of “good neurologic recovery” and is making significant improvement.
The fact that he is already back to breathing on his own is nothing short of a miracle.

On Sunday, the Bills are hosting the New England Patriots and the Bengals hosting the Baltimore Ravens. The league Friday announced plans to honor Hamlin at all 16 of this weekend’s contests, including by asking crowds to cheer in a “moment of support” before the national anthem for Hamlin and medical caregivers.
Players during warmups will have the option to wear T-shirts displaying “Love for Damar 3,” a nod to Hamiln’s jersey number.
