The New England Patriots are making roster additions in order to fashion a return to the playoffs next season, but it’s reported that there’s still some internal discord as head coach Bill Belichick is still very upset at quarterback Mac Jones for going behind his back for advice during the team’s struggles in 2022/23.
The QB was understood to have landed himself in the Belichick “doghouse” due to his actions, as NBC Sports’ Chris Simms would have it. Now, Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston is claiming that the HC is still “really pissed off” about Jones asking people outside the team for help on running the offense.
According to Curran, who appeared on WEEI’s “Jones & Mego with Archand,” Belichick viewed Jones as being disloyal which, to him, is worse than playing poorly. The QB’s search for help was also considered an undermining of Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.
Curran reckons backup veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer was released as he was also against the offensive system put in place last term and repeatedly told Jones he was up against it.
Belichick’s reputation has taken a hit since the departure of Tom Brady as he has failed to win a playoff game in the wake of the now-retired QB’s exit, also missing the postseason in two of the three seasons since then.
Brady went on to win a Super Bowl in his first year away from the team after being forced out and Belichick is already having issues with the player who was groomed as his successor.
