Mac Jones had been out for weeks due to a high ankle sprain. When he returned, he came back to a growing QB controversy after Bailey Zappe started playing so well. The New England Patriots starting quarterback didn’t last long on Monday night as he was benched mid-game in his team’s 33-14 home defeat to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football.
Throughout the game, the crowd in Gillette Stadium could be heard chanting Zappe’s name. The 23-year-old Zappe immediately had an impact, leading New England to two back-to-back touchdown drives.
However, Zappe would struggle by losing a fumble and throwing two late interceptions as the Bears would go on to score 23 straight points to turn the game and take the win.
After the game, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick was asked after the game who the team’s starter currently is going forward.
“We just finished the game,” Belichick told reporters.
On Tuesday morning, he was even more fired up being asked about Mac’s benching and whether he would continue to be the starter.

The Patriots will play next Sunday against the Jets.
