A well-known NFL insider has brought up an interesting theory regarding the New England Patriots.
During a recent edition of “PFT Live”, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio opined that New England head coach Bill Belichick would be pleased if backup Bailey Zappe outplayed Mac Jones, since it would allow the legendary head coach to show his starting QB the bench.
“I think Bill Belichick would welcome Bailey Zappe outplaying Mac Jones,” Florio stated. “It’s just my own belief…I think he would like to be able to tell Mac to go sit his a** on the bench.”
The Jones-Belichick relationship has been a key offseason storyline to follow since the end of the 2022 campaign. It has been widely reported that Belichick grew unhappy with some of Jones’ antics, including his frequent and angry outbursts on the sidelines.
Jones was far and away the best rookie quarterback of the 2021 season, but his play regressed considerably in 2022. Many attributed his struggles to Belichick’s strange decision to make Joe Judge and Matt Patricia the co-offensive play-callers, even though their backgrounds were on special teams and defense, respectively.
