Bill Belichick is an ass man, but not for the reason you are thinking.
According to a story from Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, he told a story of when he was with the Miami Dolphins under Nick Saban, one of Belichick’s closest coaching associates.
Smart recalled Saban showing him the ropes at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and wanted him to watch the New England Patriots coach in action.
“He said, ‘Come over here with me. I want you to come over and sit by Bill.’ I’m like, ‘Bill who?’ He’s like, ‘Bill Belichick. I want you to sit by him and listen to him during the combine as they talk about players,’” Smart said.
However, the former Dolphins assistant became confused when Belichick started watching the 40-yard dash for defensive linemen since the drill is famous for testing straight-line speed. Belichick had no interest in how fast they were, he was peeping soemthing else.
“They got behind them, where the thing starts at. I was like, ‘Why are we here? You can’t time the finish.’ He said, ‘No, Bill likes to look to see how big their ass is when they get down in the 40-yard stance, because he wants to sign the biggest-ass defensive lineman that he can sign.’”
Belichick’s strategy seemed to work for him. Richard Seymour and Vince Wilfork had great careers with the Patriots.
