If Bill Belichick ends up leaving the New England Patriots in 2024, there are reportedly two NFC teams to follow in the sweepstakes for the legendary head coach.
With the Patriots headed for their second consecutive losing and non-playoff season, many believe Belichick and owner Robert Kraft will agree to part ways in 2024. Or, Kraft could decide to make it more chaotic by firing Belichick himself.
Speaking on the “Toucher & Rich” radio show in Boston, Mike Giardi of the Boston Sports Journal reported that the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders are potential landing spots for Belichick if he leaves New England (h/t Andrew McCarty of The Spun):
“Bill Belichick still wants to coach. So I know there’s been like this debate on, you know, Chris Simms put out like ‘I don’t think he’s that you know I honestly I think if it’s going to go bad, I want it to look like I wasn’t planning on coaching anymore.’
Yeah. I think I don’t think he’ll want to go out this way. I think you’ll want to coach. Like I said, I don’t think I don’t think you’d get much for him in a trade. But there are teams. Sure. I think the Commanders would be a team. I think Chicago.”
If Belichick leaves the Patriots, there would be no shortage of teams interested in his services. The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach might be appealed by the idea of rebuilding a historic franchise like the Bears or Commanders, who have both been mired in mediocrity for over three decades now.
Belichick is 71 years of age, but nobody is more passionate about the game of football than the man who’s been involved in the NFL since 1975. It’s hard to envision Belichick wanting to retire, especially if plenty of teams are going to line up for his services.

The Patriots didn’t suffer a single losing season under Belichick from 2001 to 2019. After going 7-9 in 2020, they returned to the playoffs in 2021 with a 10-7 record, but the club has gone a woeful 9-14 ever since.
New England will try to get back on track when they host the 4-2 Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium this Sunday.
