New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has broken his silence on the speculation from earlier in the offseason linking the team with a move for Aaron Rodgers.
Belichick, who is very much involved in personnel decisions in New England, distanced himself from the Rodgers chat after he was asked about the rumors claiming the Pats were looking to make a trade for the quarterback.
The four-time MVP was reported to have “turned down” a trade to the Patriots earlier this year, yet Belichick insists he knew nothing of any interest in the player.
“I personally couldn’t speak to that,” he said, per Pats reporter Doug Kyed. “Listen, there’s a lot of conversations in the offseason between our personnel people and other executives. I don’t know what he’s really talking about. I personally didn’t talk to the Packers about Aaron Rodgers, no. … Aaron Rodgers is a great player. But that’s not really something we were – I was aware of.”
Eric Carton of Fox Sports said in June that the Patriots made an offer for Rodgers, whose agent rejected a move in favor of the New York Jets. The QB made it clear he only wanted to go to New York when it became clear that his time in Green Bay was done.
As for Belichick, it’s no secret that he isn’t best friends with his own quarterback Mac Jones. It’s even been reported that he tried to get the young QB traded – so that they were said to have made a play for Rodgers isn’t all that surprising.
