Veteran running back Joe Mixon was quick to shut down a rumor from a well-known social media account regarding a post about his future with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The @NFLRums X/Twitter account posted that Cincinnati is “expected to move on from” the standout running back this offseason. Mixon responded by using facepalm, laughing and clown emojis to clap back at the unconfirmed rumor:
Many expected the Bengals to cut Mixon in a cap-saving move last offseason, but they wound up keeping the Oklahoma product around. Mixon responded by recording 1,034 rushing yards (his fourth 1,000-yard season) and nine touchdowns.
According to OvertheCap.com, the Bengals would save $5.75 million in cap space if they cut Nixon this offseason. In 2020, Mixon signed a four-year contract extension with Cincinnati worth $48 million.
The Bengals have several key pending free agents, namely star wideouts Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd. Owner Mike Brown isn’t one to spend up to the cap, so it wouldn’t be surprising if he cut Mixon as a way to save money to sign other players.
For his career, Mixon has 6,412 rushing yards and 49 touchdowns.
