It does not sound like Joe Mixon might be around in Cincinnati based on comments from a team executive. Despite the fact that most of free agency has come and gone, running back Joe Mixon’s status with the Bengals appears to be up in the air.
Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn addressed Mixon at the NFL owners meetings and she did not sound like a person that expects him to be around long-term.
“Right now, he’s on the team, and we’reeeee, we … are gonna count on him until … until that wouldn’t be the case, but yes, he’s the guy,” Blackburn said.
“He’s done a lot of great things. I think he’s still got a lot of great production in him (long Blackburn pause), so I hope his other issues all get resolved in a positive way. But we’ll (another long pause) keep plugging along and hope that everything gets resolved for him one way or the other. And. Yea.”
The veteran has a cap hit over $12 million this year.
Besides his on-field production questions, Mixons is dealing with some off-field issues after police investigated a shooting at Mixon’s house earlier in March. However, police do not consider Mixon a suspect in the investigation.

According to the report, a child was shot in the backyard of a neighboring house to Mixon’s, when children were playing a game called “dart wars” involving toy guns and foam bullets.
Blackburn briefly mentioned Mixon’s off-field situation as well.
“I don’t want to get into how that might end up,” she said. “So I don’t know that it’s fair to say anything. But I think it will get resolved, hopefully, fairly soon.”
Earlier this year, a judge dismissed a charge of aggravated menacing against Mixon. But prosecutors indicated they could refile the charge once they receive more information.
Just a day before the team took on the Bills in the divisional playoff round, a woman alleges that Joe Mixon pointed a gun at her and said “you should be popped in the face, I should shoot you.”
The team is likely done with the off-the-field issues. We will likely know his fate if the franchises uses a high draft pick on a tailback.
